Mount Kenya, Lenena

Mount Kenya, Lenena

After ten negative stories we heard about the Kenyans and Nairobi, the tension we experienced at the border crossing was further enhanced by the attitude of the officials. The border police who learned we were Turkish kept us waiting for half an hour. Our passports are on the table table. The files come out of the three-door gates and we are finally convinced that we are climbers, not agents, and we can barely pass from the border.

Nairobi

After 3 hours, we reach Kenya's capital city, Nairobi. Kenya is an independent republic with its rich animal diversity, natural beauties and unique cultural heritage.

Recent history shows similarities with Tanzania. First German protection was later occupied by the British. In the same period white migrants from South Africa began to force the black people on farms they built. The fact that the British prefer Kenya to Tanzania is the surplus of agricultural arable land in the country. After long prolonged internal and external strife, Kenya gained complete independence in 1963.

English and Swahili languages are spoken in the country.

We will not be distracted in Nairobi where the plagiarism and theft events are seen too much, and we will reach the Chogoria region 2 hours away from the town with Peter, our guide for Mount Kenya climbing.

Mount Kenya

As we can not find a guide to Mount Kenya's technical climb to the Batian peak, we will try another summit of the mountain, Lenena. One of the most interesting features for us in Mount Kenya is that no Turks have ever come to this summit. We are planning to climb the visually rich Chogoria route to the Lenena summit after a tiny, prison car-like guide Peter, 6 carriers and a tortured journey on the horizon and with a little trouble with our guide on the exit route.

Mount Lenena Climbing

The next morning, Peter's plan is to overturn all the rules on mountaineering. Peter plans to go out at 1600 meters per day for 4200 meters of Minto camp. No matter how much we oppose, we have no choice. There is no room for camping because of the gradient. Worse yet, there is no water supply outside the Minto camp. Dentist Tunç Tiryaki says it is advisable to raise a maximum of 500 meters a day. However, within 6 hours we will have a terrible altitude of 2600 meters.

Mount Kenya is a spectacular mountain from a visual standpoint. The rock structure is similar to the Aladağlar, and the climate features are similar to the Kaçkar Mountains. What is interesting is the finding of trees and vegetation on 4,500 metric units. After the first 2 hours of climbing, slowdowns and serious breaks began. 10 days ago we are at the summit of Kilimanjaro we are acclimatized (the process of adapting to height) is good. But the bearers and especially our guide Peter are in extremely bad condition. At the height of 4000 meters, there are now very serious breaks between us and the Kenyans. When we reach the Minto Camp at 4200 meters, the carriers are 1 hour and Peter is 2 hours behind us.

After we have settled our tents and prepared our teas, we are able to reach the camp. However, they seem very tired and worn because of the altitude taken from one to the other. The problem is that Peter has not come yet. It does not appear to be overloaded though. Meanwhile, our friends Alicio and Tunç feel bad about themselves. I decide to go looking for Peter with a carrier in good standing. After a 300-meter landing, we see Peter lying on the ground in a semi-unconscious state. He says he can walk as far as the camp, share his cargoes and make it difficult to get to the camp.

The landscape that appears in the public is incredible. Carriers lay dead under a stone. Our strong guide !!! Peter looks worse. Tunç and Aliço are struggling with headaches in their tuxedos. His widespread belief is that tomorrow's peak climb is very difficult to take place.

When we wake up at 2:00 in the middle of the night, the situation of the patients is a little better. Only Peter's case is not changed. Philip, me, Cenk Sağman and Ziya Çobanoğlu are leaving the camp to make the first Turkish climb in the mountain range.

We will first climb a steep lane to reach Lenena's main mass, then climb a course of rock and large stones. The guide Philip is climbing quite fast, so he is often cut off. At the end of the course, the Leninan iceberg and the Australian Hut Camp are seen at the end of the glacier.

We have reached Lenovo's steep lane and rock track and successfully reached the summit of 4986 meters in 2 hours and 50 minutes. We are the first Turkish team to be summit. After taking a photograph at the top and taking plenty of fluids, we quickly pass on the bottle. Despite the fact that the air is very clear, the strong wind blows heat very much. I almost froze my fingers when I said I would take a photo.

We arrive at the Minto Camp at the end of the 1.5 hour descent, and we are more delighted to see that Tunç and Aliço meet us. The same day we collect the camp and return to Nairobi via Chogoria.
